Dr. Michelle Gremp Awarded WHAS Crusade for Children Grants
Dr. Michelle Gremp, associate professor of special education and education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the EKU’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, was awarded two WHAS Crusade for Children grants for the 2020-2021 academic year. This is the third year Dr. Gremp has been received WHAS grant money. This year the combined awards total $34.500.
$19,000 of the grant is dedicated to scholarships for graduate students earning degrees or certifications in special education. Recent award winners are listed below. Students are eligible to apply for these scholarships for more than one semester. Recipients “pay it forward” by organizing or participating in a fundraising event or making a contribution to the WHAS Crusade for Children.
Dr. Gremp was also awarded a $15,500 technology grant. This year the money will be used to purchase LENA technology. These small wearable recording devices, sometimes called a “talk pedometer,” provide transcripts of a child’s language interactions throughout the day.. Based on this analysis of this data, goals are created for improving and enriching the child’s language development.
WHAS Crusade for Children raises the money through an annual telethon and distributes grants to benefit organizations serving children across Kentucky and southern Indiana. Since it was established in 1954, the Crusade has raised more than $195 million. 100% of the $4.8 million collected this year helps make life better for children with special needs. WHAS Crusade for Children grants are made to non-profit agencies, schools and hospitals that help children with special needs up to age 18. The term “special needs” is defined as physical, mental, emotional and medical needs.
