EKU’s Adolescent Literacy Project Summer Institute 2020
EKU’s Adolescent Literacy Project Summer Institute took place July 23 – 28. Twenty-four middle and high school teachers from Fayette, Clark, Madison, Estill, and Rockcastle County participated. The program provided intensive professional development in adolescent disciplinary literacy methods and approaches. The English / language arts and social studies teachers developed action plans and committed to implementing effective literacy methods throughout the coming school year. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Institute took place online using Zoom and Google Classroom. Most participants joined the institute from their homes, while some school teams were able to meet in small, socially-distanced groups from their schools. One highlight of the institute this year was a discussion with Laura Robb, author of Read, Talk, Write, one of the project’s core texts. The Adolescent Literacy Project culminates in a state-wide Share Fair, where participants will make presentations to their peers.
This year’s program was led by Dr. Eileen Shanahan, EKU Assistant Professor, and Dr. Dorie Combs, EKU Professor Emeritus. Madison County teacher leaders Kevin Presnell and Devan Stone and Kerry Hancock, a PhD candidate studying literacy at UK, also collaborated with this year’s project. The KY Adolescent Literacy Project is supported by a state grant from the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development.
